IN BRIEF - 100% French veggie sushi

FRANCE
Thursday, October 31, 2024

A third of French people declare themselves flexitarians.

To attract them, the first sushi box based on a plant-based alternative to salmon has been created.

This unique offer on the shelves is 100% plant-based and made in France, in Loir-et-Cher. It is the result of a collaboration between Foodiz, whose Freshmood brand is dedicated to sushi and "Asian snacking" (hot dishes and poke bowls with flavors from elsewhere), and Ocean Kiss, a Bordeaux start-up that invented "solmon", a salmon substitute based on seaweed.

The box of 12 includes 6 solmon/avocado makis, 3 mango makis and 3 cucumber makis.

Other Media | SalmonBusiness: Norwegian exporters prepare for potential tariffs amid US election uncertainty

NORWAY
Thursday, October 31, 2024

Norwegian seafood exporters are bracing for potential trade barriers in the United States as the upcoming presidential election could result in increased tariffs on imported goods.

Donald Trump has proposed the heaviest tariffs since the 1930s, including a 60 percent tax on products from China and a 10 to 20 percent fee on all other foreign goods, a move that could affect Norway’s salmon industry, which considers the US a key growth market despite its traditional focus on Europe.

Other Media | SeafoodSource: After years of suspension, Russia denounces ICES

RUSSIAN FEDERATION
Thursday, October 31, 2024

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law denouncing the Convention for the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), effectively ending his country’s participation in the international scientific body.

Co-founded by Russia in 1964, ICES is a regional fishery advisory body that coordinates research on fish stocks in the North Atlantic and provides annual scientific recommendations on fishing quotas.

Russia has been at odds with ICES since 2022, when the council voted to suspend Russia indefinitely from participation in the organization following the nation's invasion of Ukraine.

IN BRIEF - Labeling will not affect the price of canned fish and seafood — CRPT

RUSSIAN FEDERATION
Wednesday, October 30, 2024

Mandatory labeling of canned fish and seafood will start in Russia on December 1.

A month before the introduction of labeling, almost the entire market was ready for the requirements, as stated by the Center for the Development of Advanced Technologies (CRPT, the operator of the Honest Sign labeling system).

"Producers of 88% of products across the country have already prepared for the appointed date. In the fishing industry Primorsky Krai, this figure is 92.2%," says a release distributed by the press service of the CRPT.

"We purchased a discounted set of equipment from the operator - it is on site and undergoing commissioning. We will be ready by the start of mandatory requirements," comments a major market player, Vostok Product.

"The introduction of labeling does not affect the final cost of the product, we see this in all industries where the system operates. At the same time, the positive effect that labeling has is visible almost immediately. For example, there was a rapid "whitening" of the red and black caviar market, where labeling began this year: in six months, 71 companies emerged from the "shadows", which, probably, before the start of labeling, were not operating entirely legally. At the moment, almost 10 thousand tons of labeled caviar have been released into circulation, and 31 thousand companies have registered with the "Honest Sign", - commented in the CRPT.

The workshops were carried out, in person and virtually, with the participation of 131 people.

With the aim of promoting aquaculture activity and productive diversity in the country, the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE), through the National Fisheries Development Fund (FONDEPES), carried out four training activities on the cultivation of Amazonian fish and trout in the regions of Ucayali and Piura.

He also highlighted that three of the activities were carried out in person and one was carried out virtually.

These initiatives allow us to strengthen the competitiveness of the sector and open new opportunities for small and medium-sized aquaculturists, which is essential for the economic development of our regions," said Minister González Guerrero.

The Minister of Production emphasized that the Central Government, through these actions, reaffirms its commitment to the development of aquaculture and productive diversification throughout the country.

Investment of nearly GBP 1 billion on fish health and welfare has helped deliver the best survival rate for Scottish farmed salmon since 2020, with new figures published by trade body Salmon Scotland confirming a 98.18% survival rate on farms in September, which is traditionally the most challenging month for salmon in the sea.

The percentage of fallen stock was around half the rate recorded in September last year, when warm sea temperatures in the autumn led to micro jellyfish blooms which can harm fish.
